Walk the Offa's Dyke
A walk through an ancient fortified borderland
BOOK NOW

About the Trail:

Facts: Journey on foot along the 1200 year old border fortification through a land of legend and history. The 177 miles long Offa’s Dyke Path winds along the English-Welsh border from Prestatyn in the north of Wales to Chepstow in the south. This magnificent route, one of Britain’s longest Paths, follows the ancient earthwork barrier built by Offa, the warlord King of Mercia, in the 8th century to protect his kingdom from his rivals in what is now Wales following two brutal but failed invasions to subdue the Welsh.

Highlights: The Path, largely on the Welsh side of the border, takes in a wonderful diversity of terrain and landscapes with plenty to divert your attention along the route. The trail follows hidden trails through villages and woodland, open panoramic meadow paths, canal tow-paths and old drovers’ roads; meanders alongside the rivers Severn and Wye, through the beauty of the Vale of Clwyd, hills of Shropshire and over the Black Mountains.

You’ll discover some wonderful viewpoints, market towns and remote villages; see castles and forts and enjoy the rich and varied wildlife this region has to offer; the landscape covered by the trail allows glimpses into the history, mythology and sheer beauty of this border country and is one of the hidden jewels of the Welsh crown.

Take a look at the route options for walking the Path with a duration and daily walking distance to suit you.

The nature of the Trail:

The terrain of the Offa’s Dyke path differs considerably, however it is generally well signposted and maintained. The trail crosses hills, forests, moors and is rarely flat which makes the walk strenuous. Ascent: lowest 99 meters, highest 330 meters. Descent: lowest 125 meters, highest 715 meters.

Extending your holiday: Offa's Dyke can also be combined with the Glyndwr's Way.

As a guided holiday: You might also be interested in walking the Offa's Dyke Path in an organised group as part of our Ramblers Walking Holidays programme.

"Many thanks for your help in arranging my little adventure, it was a wonderful mixture of accommodation all very good/excellent." Michael V.

"We did  enjoy our holiday, and had a great time. Everything ran smoothly (...). Your maps and instructions were first class. We would not hesitate to book through you again, or recommend you to others." Marion B.

"I just want to say that we had a wonderful time walking Offa's Dyke Path over the last two weeks. The weather was very kind to us just 2 or 3 episodes of rain. The arrangements you made were excellent and everything went very smoothly. The over riding feature of the holiday accommodation, was the friendliness of the people we met. I would like to say thank you very much for the arrangements." Margaret W.

"(...) thank you for a most enjoyable holiday. Apart from two rather dull and wet days (unfortunately for the higher parts of our walk), which you could not govern, the walk was even better than we had hoped. We were delighted with the organization of the holiday and the information pack you provided. The accommodation was very varied but everyone was very friendly and helpful. We will be very happy to use your service again. Thanks again." Peter B.
