The Serra de Montsant is a protected area, in the Serra de Montsant Natural Park. It is referred to as the 'Holy Mountain Range' because of the many hermits living there in early Medieval times. It is a lovely area of quiet hillside villages bordered by vineyards.

You’ll discover many historical sites, such as the Monastery at Poblet, and walk through tranquil woods with a wonderful diversity of Mediterranean vegetation.

About the Route

Facts: Montsant, or Sacred Mountain, forms part of a beautiful limestone massif in southern Catalonia. The route is a mix of undulating cobbled mule paths, dirt tracks and possibly some tarmac paths as you enter and leave villages. Average daily mileage of 10.5 miles in a mix of linear and circular walks with a couple of days offering more challenging ascents.

  • The nature of the trail:

    The trail is described as moderate with an average daily walking of 4-6 hours and is best enjoyed from April through to October. In July and August it can be very hot. Pathways are a mix of undulating cobbled mule paths and dirt tracks in sometimes, hilly and mountainous areas.

    Arrival - Arrive in La Morera

    Transfer by taxi (included) from Reus centre to the village of la Morera de Montsant, on the edge of the Sierra de Montsant Natural Park.

    Day 1 - Circular walk from La Morera 9.3m (15 km)

    A circular walk today takes you via the hamlet of Poboleda, among vineyards, and to the centuries-old remains of Cartoixa d'Escaladei Monastery.

    5 hours, 9.3m/15kms, ascent 490m, descent 490m.

    Day 2 - Walk from La Morera to Ulldemolins 10.6m (17 km)

    A steep ascent to the top of the Serra Major range, takes you along cliffs with marvellous panoramic views. The descent, on the far side of the massif, through Pi de la Carabasseta, brings you to Ulldemolins, located in the Valley of Silence.

    6.5 hours, 10.6m/17kms, ascent 680m, descent 790m.

    Day 3 - Walking from Ulldemolins to Prades 10.6m (17kms)

    You transfer from Ulldemolins to the start of the path (included). Today is perhaps one of the most beautiful walks in Mediterranean Europe, following an impressive gorge, with the descent into a side ravine. On the way to Prades, you pass a small church and monastery before reaching this lively historical town.

    Day 4 - Circular walk from Prades 6.5m (10.5kms)

    Walking towards the little mountain of Capafonts, via a steep ascent to the lovely l'Abellera monastery chapel, perched high up on a cliff. You’ll have the opportunity to visit Padres on your return.

    3.5 hours, 6.5m/10.5kms, ascent 450m, descent 450m

    Day 5 - From Prades to Montblanc 15.2m (24.5kms)

    You’ll experience an outstanding nature walk today through the beautiful Montes de Prades, with its incredibly diverse vegetation, to the picturesque medieval town of Montblanc.

    7.5 hours, 15.2m/24.5kms, ascent 460m, descent 970m.

    Day 6 - Walk to the Poblet Monastery 9.6m (15.5kms)

    You start the day with a short journey by train (not included) to Vimbodí. Today’s walk takes you through the Conca de Barberà wine region en route to the awe-inspiring Cistercian Monastery of Poblet. Vineyards, olive trees and almond orchards compliment this feast for the eyes. The day’s walk ends in Montblanc.
