About the Trail:

Facts: This long distance walking route across the Scottish Borders to the Northumberland Coast follows in the footsteps of St Cuthbert. The St Cuthbert’s Way goes between Melrose, the location of St Cuthbert's early monastic life, to Lindisfarne, the area of St Cuthbert's later ministry and death. It offers fantastic, varied walking suitable for people of all ages and abilities’, surrounded by traditional Scottish countryside vistas. Originally a pilgrimage route, the path now serves to provide some of the most enjoyable walking in Scotland, with variety enough to keep all tastes entertained.

Highlights: One of the undeniable highlights of the walk is The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, accessible only by a causeway exposed at low tide. The Holy Island is home to the breathtaking Lindisfarne Castle, which appeared in Roman Polanski’s ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ as Glamis castle, and is now a National Trust site. As well as this, there is the chance to visit the beautiful Melrose Abbery, the final resting place for many Scottish kings and noblemen, famed for its carvings of saints, dragons, gargoyles and plants. The mild climate of the area makes walking possible all year, with each season offering its own unique bonuses to the walk: Spring offers longer daylight hours and sun, whereas the autumnal colours to be seen around September are a whole new spectacle within themselves. The path offers a wide variety of views, with everything between rolling moorlands and rugged coastlines, offering a new experience every step of the way.

The nature of the Trail:

The path begins in the lively Borders town of Melrose, from which point it begins an invigorating climb over the Eildon Hills, and along the banks of the River Tweed. Not long after this, there is another climb up to Wideopen Hill, which, at 400m, is the highest point on the trail, and marks the midpoint between Melrose and Lindisfarne. From thereupon, the trail remains relatively flat, traversing foothills and woodland until it reaches its climax at the causeway to The Holy Island.
