Walk the Hadrian's Wall Path
From Newcastle to Bowness on Solway
BOOK NOW

About the Trail:

Facts: The UNESCO World Heritage site of Hadrian's Wall is a majestic and staggering monument to Roman ingenuity, stretching 84-miles from the vibrant and proud North Sea city of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne to the peaceful solitude of the Solway Firth on the Irish Sea coast. Hadrian built the wall between AD 120-128 to mark and defend the northern boundary of the empire, and even today this remains a remarkable monument.

All our routes recommend walking the path from east to west, and the middle sections in particular pass through some of the most remote and spectacular country in Britain, little changed since the Romans left. The path stays close to the remains of the wall for much of its length.

Highlights: Hadrian's Wall passes through the beautiful and unique Northumberland National Park and is littered with Roman turrets, temples and forts including outstanding Vindolanda and Housesteads.

You can take time from the trail to visit these well preserved sites. The trail rarely ventures far from the course of the wall and the scenery on this epic walk is as majestic as the history and takes in distant panoramas of The Pennines, Scotland and the peaks of The Lake District. Take a look at the route options for walking the path for a holiday with a duration and daily walking distance to suit you.

The nature of the Trail:

Anyone who is reasonably fit should be able to walk the Hadrian’s Wall Path. The part between Chollerford and Birdoswald (west of Gilsland) is a switchback with many of short ascents and descents; it is similar to walking along the coast. The path has mostly a grassy surface; only the Tyneside section (on approach to Wallsend) is tarmac. Direction-finding is not difficult and the trail is very well signposted with the acorn symbol as well as way marking arrows. The maximum ascent on this path is 326 meters (1,070ft).

"We have recently returned from walking Hadrian's Walk (on a holiday organised by Load Off Your Back) and felt that we must let you know how much we enjoyed the experience. The organisation was superb. Our luggage was moved on each day without any hitches. Our accommodation was first class - beautifully appointed rooms and a very substantial breakfast each morning. (...) many, many thanks for a wonderful holiday (the weather was glorious - only two short spells of rain and not too hot!). We will certainly recommend Load Off Your Back to others and will use you again when we decide to tackle our next long distance walk." Margaret S.

"Thank you very much for organising such a lovely holiday walking Hadrian's Wall Path (...). Overall the holiday was a great success. Your organisation was perfect and timely. The lengths of each day's walk were well judged. The accommodation was always good (...). The baggage transfers were faultless. I found the walk to be very interesting with lots of historical sites to visit. Even the first day's walk through Newcastle was fascinating. All the maps, guides and assorted information were helpful. I would definitely use your services for future holidays. Once again thank you for arranging such a happy and stress-free holiday." "Thank you very much indeed for all the arrangements you made for our Hadrian's Wall adventure. Everything worked seamlessly and we had a most wonderful week. The taxis you organised were right on time and the baggage transfers ensured our cases were always waiting for us at the end of each day's walk. The accommodation was all very well situated and (...) of the highest standard. (...) We couldn't have been luckier with the weather. Every day was clear, bright and still, with a temperature perfect for walking. The daily distances were just right. This and the weather meant we could enjoy every aspect of the trip: beautiful views, lovely fresh air and of course the history and culture which we had plenty of opportunity to absorb with the help of the magnificent Trailblazer book. Very many thanks again, and we look forward to consulting you about a further section of the South West Coast Path which we hope to tackle sometime next year." Carol and David E.

"Excellent holiday, all went well, helped by perfect weather. All accommodation good (...) and baggage transfer worked efficiently. Hope to go on another Load Off Your Back holiday next year." Ed and Margaret K.
