BOOK NOW

About the Trail:

Facts: 600 million years ago, before being separated by the Atlantic Ocean, Scotland was once a part of what we today call North America; more recently the West Highland Way was included as a European link in the International Appalachian Trail. It is Britain's most popular long distance path due to its spectacular landscape showcasing some of Scotland's finest scenery in its 97 miles. Walking the Way is the ideal approach to really discover the mountains, glens and lochs of Scotland's Western Highlands.

Highlights: The walk begins comfortably at Milngavie in Glasgow's northern suburbs, through meadowland and forest to Loch Lomond's sparkling shores with dramatic waterfalls never far from earshot. The towering mountains reflect in the glistening Loch Lomond waters as you walk this magnificent trail. The walk passes through Rob Roy's country revealing some challenging sections and awe inspiring mountain views. The West Highland Way continues to the ramparts of Ben Lomond, over moors and through stunning valleys to The Bridge of Orchy and on to fantastic views from the summit of the Devil's Staircase. The pinnacle of the walk is the tremendous view of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain, that welcomes you at the end of this rewarding trail.

Take a look at the route options for walking the path for a holiday with a duration and daily walking distance to suit you. This self-guided route pack includes an insightful and comprehensive guide littered with historic notes and tales to embellish your walking experience.

The nature of the Trail:

The route is mainly on good paths and tracks which can be twisty, undulating and rough in places. There are some rough sections along the way and the walk across Rannoch Moor  (between Inveroran and Kingshouse) in particular is very exposed, however these are rewarded with some spectacular scenery. Daily distances if walking the route over 6 days are 12 to 20 miles with daily ascents of between 420m – 1,300m; with  9 walking days daily distance are 6½ to 14 miles with ascents between about 300m and 750m.
