Majesty, History and Drama

About the Trail:

Facts: Some say that the rolling hills countryside of the South Downs has some of the finest views in Britain. The 100 mile National Trail takes you from Winchester, the first capital of England with its majestic cathedral, the Great Hall of Winchester Castle and King Arthur’ legendary Round Table to the spectacular white chalk cliffs of Eastbourne and white stripped Beachy Head Lighthouse. The Way follows for the most part the ridge of the South Downs, a historic route between the pretty Sussex and Hampshire villages scattering The Downs, making this trail a comfortable introduction to a long distance path.

Highlights: The spectacular Devil's Dyke valley near Brighton, is a natural amphitheatre with wide ranging views taking in The Weald and Isle of Wight. The innumerable pretty villages on and just off the trail provide plenty of opportunity for slowing the pace, including Alfriston which has a short detour to the Long Man of Wilmington, a mysterious chalk figure said to be the guardian of the South Downs. The beautiful river valleys and woodlands teem with wildlife and add to this truly peaceful and pleasurable walking holiday. Take a look at the route options for walking the path for a holiday with a duration and daily walking distance to suit you.

The nature of the Trail:

The South Downs Way runs entirely along the South Downs National Park. You will encounter some fairly steep hills along the way, but the path is usually open and walking conditions, even on a rainy day, are reasonably easy due to the fast draining chalk. Ascents rarely exceed more than 230 meters.
