About the Trail:

Facts: The route runs through Welsh countryside, beginning in Knighton, a small market town on the English-Welsh border. It continues into mid-Wales, passing through many more beautiful market towns such as Llanidloes, and some smaller, quintessentially Welsh villages including Abbeycwmhir and Llanfyllin. The walk is named after Owain Glyndwr, the last native Prince of Wales, and a figurehead of Welsh Nationalism thanks to the ‘Cymru Fydd’ (Young Wales) movement of the late 19th century. The trail was grated national trail status in 2000 to mark the 600th anniversary of an ill-fated rebellion on the part of the Welsh in 1400.

Highlights: One of the undeniable highlights of the trail is Powis Castle, which started life as a medieval fortress. Now, however, it is home to world-class gardens, laid out in Italian and French styles, with its original lead statues still intact, dating back at least 300 years. The castle itself houses a fine collection of paintings, tapestries and sculptures, and is a shrine of opulence. The walk also passes through the Glaslyn Wildlife Trust reserve, the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust’s biggest nature reserve. The vast sweep of moorland is best enjoyed in July/August, when the reserve is taken over by the purple haze of flowering heather, a spectacular sight complimented by the large upland lake in the centre of the reserve. In summer, the long days and blazing sunshine bring a cheerful (if sometimes a little warm) atmosphere to the walk, whereas some prefer the delicate wild flowers of spring or the majestic colours of autumn.

The nature of the Trail:

The path begins in the quiet town of Knighton on the Welsh border, and reaches its highest point at Foel Fadian (150ft/510m), which, on a clear day, offers views along the Dulas valley all the way along to the wild coastline and rolling sea. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can walk the trail, although there are many steep inclines and quick changes in gradient. One of the attractions of the walk is that is passes though real, unadulterated farming land, which does have the added effect that the country can sometimes be rough and remote. Good navigational skills will be required if you are planning on walking at times of impaired visibility, such as at during misty conditions.

Extending your holiday: The Glyndwr's Way can also be combined with the Offa's Dyke.
